ART FOR WAR AND PEACE
The idea that launched the project was: Get Canada’s greatest living painters to contribute to the war effort in 1943 by creating bold new works under the guidance of the National Gallery of Canada and artists, A.Y. Jackson and A.J Casson.
Sampson-Mathews would turn the paintings into large high-quality silkscreens, which would be sent to every military unit and government office involved in the war. This whole project certainly reinforced the Group of Seven’s central role in this country’s art and the primacy of landscape as the raw material of Canadian identity. Every single silkscreen of every artist was under the direct supervision and approval of A.J. Casson and signed with his live signature before release.
