  /  A Fly Fishing Sampler

Date: Sept. 20 – 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Location: Calgary
Venue: The Deane House & Bow River
Lead: Jim & Linda McLennan

Pair two of the West’s most treasured gems – fly fishing and the historic Deane House restaurant through this day of adventure and culinary delights set at the banks of the mighty Bow River.

Your leads are Jim and Lynda McLennan, two of the West’s foremost fly fishers with more than 75 years of combined experience on the river.

Jim was one of the first fly fishing guides on Alberta’s Bow River, and is a well-known outdoor writer and speaker. He is the author of four books on fly fishing, and contributing editor for Fly Fisherman and Fly Fusion magazines, as well as co-host of Fly Fusion Television, a series broadcast on the World Fishing Network.

Lynda was a founding director of Casting For Life, a fly fishing retreat for breast cancer survivors, and has been teaching fly fishing in various formats since the 1980s.

You’ll meet at the Deane House, originally built in 1906 for Captain Richard Burton Deane, where you will be guided to the Library, a private room tucked away at the top of the main staircase of the historic house. Here, in this timeless place surrounded by artifacts and maps true to Captain Deane’s era, you’ll enjoy coffee and pastries while introductions are made and the fly fishing adventure begins.

The event will be structured based on the experience level of participants, from novice to experienced. Your instructors will spend some time giving you an introduction to the world of fly fishing, including a discussion on all things trout, fly fishing equipment, what to wear to go fly fishing, and finally, the intricate art of tying a fly fishing knot. (you might expect a friendly competition here.)

Soon enough, you’ll head outside to spend the afternoon first, dry casting on the banks of the Bow River, and then over to the water for a demonstration of the three essential fly-fishing methods.

The afternoon will finish up with a competition of accuracy and distance casting for participants!

After the instruction part of the day, your group will meet again in the outdoor patios of the Deane House for a round of culinary delights from the kitchen that have been specially curated for this event and a complimentary beverage.

DETAILS: You’ll meet at 12:30 p.m. at the Deane House in Inglewood, Calgary. Event runs from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. All supplies included. Coffee and pastries served pre-event, and appetizers and beverage after.

Ticket Price: $155.00
